I am not a lawyer, I have no legal experience or skills. These are my opinions, but I hope they may be of use to you. To help you avoid problems.

As a keen sports (wo)man your interest may be cycling, running, gymnastics, whatever. It may even be the martial arts, karate, aikido, or any of a wide range of systems.

My concern here is that you may be out training by yourself, without a partner. Thus – at risk of being mugged or worse.

Possible? These days, probably Probable!

Consideration Number One – you are most definitely not allowed to carry a weapon to protect yourself against the risk of attack, or anything which can be construed as a weapon. Legal Fact! The measure is: Reasonability. Is it reasonable for you to be carrying a baseball bat when out on your bike? Or that ninja sword when going to the public swimming baths? Would a jury consider it ‘reasonable’ … A carpenter with a screwdriver, Yes; but a road runner with the same – No! Full Story »

What are some philosophical reasons not to commit suicide?
Sociobiology teaches that a certain set of egotistical, selfish values remain with us from antiquity and will continue to be cavemen. Certainly the insanity of this Second Great Depression seems to confirm the selfish war of all against war that hides behind the facade of law, civilization and morality. And look at male-female relations. With all the complaints of “political correctness” walk into any college fraternity or bar and cavemen ethics still rule. Full Story »

How can the infinite pains of life be justified in comparison to the calm serenity of nonexistence? Has any man in history lived a life so blessed as to outweigh the pleasures of endless dreamless sleep? Is not man’s greatest sin to have been born? What duty is there to continue to live? We did not choose to be born.
Why pass on genes, and sentence another generation to hell for the selfish pleasure of sexual desire? Full Story »

Suicide and Self-Harm

?

Introduction and definitions:

Suicide is a form of deliberate self harm (nowadays the term self harm has replaced DSH, parasuicide, attempted suicide. In this lecture the term DSH will still be used) which end up with the individual being expired.

There are no figures here to indicate the percentage of suicide as a cause of death. On average suicide is taken on average as 1% as a death cause, however this is oversimplification and the figure will change from one country to the next, depending on many factors.

DSH ends without death and is far much more common than suicide. In the next section a comparison a between suicide (i.e. ends with death) and DSH (i.e. ends with no death) will be given in the two boxes below:

Suicide

Older (age>40years) Male Violent method Planned 90% mentally ill

Deliberate Self Harm (DSH)

Young Female Overdose Impulsive Mental illness rare

Aetiology:

Mental illness is by far the most important cause of suicide, present in 90% of cases. Full Story »
